At Grand Rapids Ophthalmology, we offer Free Laser Evaluations* to determine if you are a candidate for Custom BLADE-FREE LASIK or PRK.

A laser evaluation is a very thorough eye exam with the addition of several other tests including corneal topography which provides us with a topographical map of YOUR cornea. This test may find specific corneal problems that are invisible through other examination methods. We also perform corneal thickness readings (pachymetry) to determine the depth of your cornea. Following is a list of the procedures included in a laser evaluation.

  • History of vision problems
  • Medical History
  • Visual Acuity
  • Intraocular Pressure Readings (glaucoma test)
  • Confrontation Visual Fields
  • Keratometry Readings
  • Schirmer Tear Test to evaluate if your eyes are dry and/or producing enough tears
  • Refraction-either manual or with our state of the art computerized EPIC System
  • Cycloplegic Refraction. (Refraction following dilation to determine your exact prescription)
  • Examination of the front part of your eye, including your cornea, pupil, iris, lens with the slit lamp microscope
  • Dilation
  • Examination of the inside of your eye including your retina and optic nerve
  • Corneal Topography
  • Pachymetry
  • Pupil Measurements
  • Consent Video with True and False Test
  • Wavescan
  • Summary of your tests and recommendations by your laser doctor

Please be aware that your eyes are dilated for laser evaluations which causes sensitivity to light and the inability see up close to read or do other near work. This may last until the following day. You may want your sunglasses or we are happy to provide disposable sunglasses for you.

* The laser evaluation is at no charge unless you request a copy of your glasses prescription, then a $150.00 evaluation fee applies.
