At Grand Rapids Ophthalmology, we are proud to be the only laser center in West Michigan to offer the All Laser LASIK procedure using the Intralase® Laser.

Did you know that LASIK is a two-step procedure? A flap is made in the cornea, folded back and then the cool beam reshapes corneal tissue under flap. Traditionally, an instrument called a microkeratome made the flap in your cornea using a metal blade and then the Excimer laser gently removed the proper amount of tissue.

This method has worked well; however, the microkeratomes can be unpredictable. Although LASIK complications are rare, this device is the common source of reported complications. The assurance that the IntraLase® created flap will be securely re-positioned without incident provides added peace of mind for many patients.

IntraLase® is considered a much safer approach to vision correction surgery. The reason for this is because use of a computer-controlled laser as compared to that of a hand-held mechanical device. Using the Intralase® laser to make the flap provides more precision, safety and predictably better vision compared to a hand held mechanical device. The laser replaces the metal blade so the corneal flap is made with a gentle laser beam providing more precise, safer and predictably better vision. Many patients choose the All Laser LASIK Procedure using Intralase instead of the metal blade.

Did you know that many patients who were not candidates in the past are now able to have LASIK? With the All Laser LASIK procedure, many patients who were not candidates in the past are able to have the procedure because the flap is made with a laser and not the metal blade.
