We perform Custom BLADE-FREE LASIK and PRK. You and your doctor will decide which procedure is best for your eyes. The fee is all-inclusive and includes your initial evaluation, corneal topography, WaveScan for custom patients, the procedure and all of your post-operative visits for one year following your initial procedure.
CUSTOM LASIK
Now-Uniquely Precise, Safer and Predictably Better Vision
Did you know that LASIK is a two-step procedure? A flap is made in the cornea, folded back and then the cool beam reshapes corneal tissue under flap. Traditionally, an instrument called a microkeratome made the flap in your cornea using a metal blade and then the Excimer laser gently removed the proper amount of tissue. This method has worked well; however, the microkeratomes can be unpredictable. Although LASIK complications are rare, this device is the common source of reported complications.
BLADE-FREE LASIK
At Grand Rapids Ophthalmology, we are proud to offer BLADE-FREE LASIK, creating the corneal flap with a gentle laser beam rather than a metal blade. Most patients choose BLADE-FREE LASIK laser procedure simply because it provides more precision, safety and predictable better vision compared to a hand held metal mechanical device.
With the All Laser LASIK procedure, many patients who were not candidates in the past are able to have the procedure because the flap is made with a laser and not the metal blade.

LASIK
LASIK (Laser-in-Situ Keratomileusis) uses a cool beam to remove corneal tissue under the surface of the cornea. An instrument called a microkeratome allows the doctor to fold back a thin layer of the cornea and then the excimer laser gently removes the proper amount of tissue. The thin layer is folded back to the original position and bonds within minutes. The eye is not patched after the procedure.
There is little or no pain after the procedure since the epithelium is left intact. Vision is improved within hours. LASIK can be used to correct the following:
| Nearsightedness: |
-1.00 to -14.00 |
| Farsightedness: |
+1.00 to +6.00 |
| Astigmatism: |
Up to 5.00 diopters with nearsightedness |
|
Up to 4.00 diopters with farsightedness |
|
Up to -6.00 with up to 3.00 diopters of Astigmatism |
PRK
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) uses a cool beam of light to gently reshape the surface of the eye, which is the cornea.
The eye is numbed using eye drops and the epithelium (a thin protective layer that protects the cornea) is removed. A light is presented for fixation and in less than 60 seconds the light pulses to remove a microscopic amount of tissue, flattening the cornea, allowing images to focus on the retina.
After PRK, vision is blurred for three to five days because the epithelium was removed. A bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to minimize discomfort and aid in healing. Some patients experience the sensation of sand in the eye and sensitivity to light. Final visual results are apparent anywhere from a week to a few months since the cornea heals differently for everyone.
